3. Origin
The first global World Sleep Day was held in 2008, with the theme: Sleep Well, Live Fully Awake.
Earlier in 2001, the World Foundation for Mental Health and Neuroscience launched a Sleep Day observed on March 21, which is not affiliated with the current official WSS system.

5. Goals & Significance
- Raise global public awareness of sleep health.
- Highlight that sleep, along with diet and exercise, constitutes the three pillars of health.
- Mitigate the physical and mental harms caused by sleep disorders such as insomnia, snoring and sleep apnea.
- Promote research and public education in sleep medicine.
6. Global Status
According to WHO statistics, around 27% of the world’s population suffers from sleep-related problems.
Sleep disorder consultation rates are higher in developed countries, while public awareness remains relatively low in developing nations.
Every March, over 100 countries worldwide host popular science lectures, free medical consultations, media campaigns and other related activities.
